Please allow 30–45 minutes for your initial skin analysis and consultation. Your makeup will be removed prior to your consultation. You can download our forms prior to your visit if you’d like.
On your first visit, as a part of your consultation, your skin will be cleaned and analyzed with our VISIA complexion imaging system to help us determine the best options for you. Photos will be obtained.
A VISIA complexion analysis is used to provide the most comprehensive and precise skin complexion analysis to evaluate your skin concerns (spots, wrinkles, pores, sun damage, redness, and bacteria). The system provides quantitative values for each of these features that could previously only be evaluated subjectively. In addition, it compares your skin to others of the same age, sex, and ethnicity. After your computerized skin analysis is completed, you will be provided with treatment options that may include products, prescriptions, treatments, or laser services that address your concerns and expectations. If you choose, your treatments may be initiated on the same day, immediately following your complimentary consultation.
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions being treated in the United States today. When left untreated, acne can leave dark spots and scars and have a poor effect on your self-esteem. There are numerous treatment options for both teens and adults with this condition:
- Oral and topical prescription medications
- At-home, customized skin care regimens
- Treatments such as light therapy, peels, and HydraFacial® infusions
In your consultation, we will discuss what combination of treatments that will work best for you.
Acne Scars Treatments
Effective treatments for acne scars include lasers, peels, dermal fillers, and minor surgeries. A ProFractional™ laser treatment alone, and in some cases combined with the Contour TRL skin resurfacing, can produce visible improvement of acne scarring. Multiple in-office treatments are often necessary, but most experience improved skin and self-esteem after their first treatment. Forever Young BBL can also further improve acne, scars, and pores with no downtime. A post-laser makeup consultation and customized prescription skin care regimen can also assist in proper healing and a speedy recovery.
Rosacea can leave you feeling self-conscious. Our patients have found BBL treatments to be very effective in producing visible improvements in redness. Keeping rosacea controlled will require maintenance treatments two to four times per year. Our Anti-Redness Essentials product system is an affordable, at-home skin care system that nourishes, soothes, and protects skin with this condition. Your nurse practitioner may use it alone or combine it with prescription medications, BBL treatments, and laser genesis for optimal results.
Melasma is a frustrating, sometimes embarrassing skin condition. It often presents on the face in patches of brown or gray spots. These darkened areas most commonly appear on the forehead and above the upper lip, but melasma can also occur on the cheeks, chin, and nose. Often, it goes undiagnosed and untreated for years. People with skin of color, such as Asian or Hispanic skin, can experience increased spots of color that are difficult to camouflage and are often the first to seek advice.
People who have been properly diagnosed with melasma can incorporate a number of lifestyle changes and customized daily skin care regimens in addition to prescription peels to improve this condition. A broad-spectrum sun protection used every day will help protect skin from darkening. We encourage you to visit Susan’s Sun Bar in our office to find the right protection for you.
Most individuals will see improvement in two to four weeks by using the prescription medications hydroquinone, tretinoin, and possibly corticosteroids. The Obagi Nuderm® system is an effective daily at-home skin regimen that incorporates two of these topical prescription medications to improve melasma. ProFractional™ laser treatments can also break up this difficult pigment. These laser treatments improve the overall appearance of the skin by smoothing skin texture, evening out irregular color, and brightening tone.
Fine lines and wrinkles are a common concern for both men and women in their 30s. Lines and wrinkles begin to appear between the eyebrows, the forehead, and as crow’s feet. These wrinkle lines are referred to as dynamic facial lines because they’re caused by muscles that contract with facial expressions. These types of wrinkles are best addressed with a neuromodulator such as BOTOX® or Dysport®, which are purified proteins.
Of course, not all wrinkles are caused by underlying muscles. Loss of collagen, fat, and bone are typically related to aging, weight loss, and stress and will cause the skin to form jowls and deeper wrinkles around the mouth.
Treatment approaches are determined by the degree of facial volume loss, skin type, and the desired result. Dermal fillers made of hyaluronic acid, such as JUVÉDERM® XC, JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC, Restylane® Silk, Restylane® Lyft, or facial volumizers such as Sculptra® Aesthetics and Bellafill® restore a youthful appearance to the face with virtually no downtime. Other options to address fine to deeper wrinkles include laser treatments such as NanoLaserPeel™, ProFractional™, or Contour TRL™ laser peels.
Age Spots, Sun Damage, Uneven Skin Tones
Youthful skin is bright and light reflective with even skin tones and smooth texture. Aging skin often presents brown spots, uneven skin tones, and dullness caused over years of exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun. Even when sun protection is applied, it may not block out the aging ultraviolet rays or be applied with adequate frequency to protect our skin.
We use Sciton® Forever Young BBL™ treatments to address age spots, uneven skin tones, and redness. Susan led the way and brought Sciton to Des Moines in 2012! The Stanford study reveals BroadBand Light treatments can restore gene expression of aged human skin to resemble much younger skin. This treatment was perfected by Dermatologist Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr., who also developed FotoFacial® AgeDelay™. Susan has participated in multiple preceptorships under the direction of Dr. Bitter to learn his Forever Young BBL techniques. Photo rejuvenation treatments can provide many of the benefits of more aggressive laser treatments without the downtime! Forever Young BBL will not only improve brown pigmentation, flushing, and redness, but many of our patients also comment on the improvement they’ve seen in their pores and skin’s luminosity.
Sagging skin on the face, neck, knees, abs, and arms can be the result of sun exposure, aging, weight loss, stress, or smoking. Surgery used to be the only option to correct skin that was causing “turkey neck” or saggy jowls, but now we have SkinTyte—a non-invasive process that heats the skin to a precise temperature to cause contraction of the collagen, improving skin elasticity. Many describe these warm treatments as very comfortable with a gradual result, which may be realized as much as six months after the final treatment. Maintenance treatments are recommended to sustain improvements.
This treatment utilizes advanced infrared light technology and filters that are customized to each patient. The technology heats dermal collagen while continuously protecting the treated epidermis with sapphire contact cooling for optimal clinical endpoints, safety, and comfort. This treatment causes soft tissue coagulation and deep tissue heating that initiates the body’s natural healing process, leading to increased tissue firmness. There is no downtime, and patients can resume their regular activities immediately following treatment.
TruSculpt 3D is ideal for reducing stubborn body fat and overall body contours that remain despite a good diet and regular exercise. It also tightens skin in problem areas like the neck. TruSculpt 3D is an energy-based procedure that delivers controlled and comfortable doses of therapeutic heat to reduce fat and firm and tighten the skin. You can see results with just two to four treatments with no downtime to follow!
